How to get to Belém from the Lisbon Center

The parish of Belém is one of the main tourist attractions in Lisbon. Much linked to the Portuguese discoveries, it was from this zone that many of the adventures began that spread the Portuguese people around the world, and make the Portuguese language one of the most talked about in the world, leaving its influence in the American continent, African and Asian.

Much tied to the Portuguese royalty, who took refuge in this area to escape the center of the city, is packed with some of the most important tourist attractions of the city, and important in the history of Portugal. Its the ideal place for a family trip, your childrens will never forget.

Belém is often destined for those who visit the city of Lisbon for a day trip, which is not surprising, given the vast array of tourist attractions, in which we can highlight the Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower, but also includes many other points of obligatory passage, such as the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, museums such as the National Coach Museum, of Electricity, Berardo Museum, the Navy Museum and, of course, we could not fail to mention the famous Pasteis de Belém, another compulsory point of a trip to Lisbon .
Situated on the banks of the Tagus River, the parish of Belém is located in the Western part of the City of Lisbon, about 6 kilometers from downtown Lisbon and, Non Stop Family wood like to help you get here.

How to get to Belém

With time and for those who like to walk, it is possible to walk this way on a beautiful way by the river, but it is a journey that can take more than an hour and it is often that those who arrive in Lisbon are confronted with the question of how to get to Belém. And this question is more pertinent because there is no metro line in Belém, which leads one to think about how to reach this destination. For families traveling with small children, it can be even harder.

So, at Non Stop Family, we wanted to leave suggestions on the best options on how to get to Belém from the downtown of Lisbon.

Tram 15 E

The first option we are going to talk about is Tram 15E . This Tram can catch in the Downtown, namely in Figueira Square, which is located right next to Rossio Square (or Dom Pedro IV Square), towards the Castle. There is nothing to fail, you can see the exact place where to pick up the electric in google maps.
On a trip of about 30 minutes, you will arrive at the Jeronimos Monastery stop, where you will have to get off, as the tram continues towards Algés (Jardim). In the return, pick up the same tram 15 but, in the opposite direction.
It is easy to identify that you are arriving at the exit station, the Jerónimos Monastery is a beautiful and imposing building, which will be located on the right side of the arrivals. If you have any fear, just ask the driver or some local people who will be happy to tell you the right stop.

Unlike the Tram 28, usually this is a modern electric, that circulates with great frequency, being difficult to have to stay more than 15 minutes waiting for it (you can consult the schedules and prices here.

You can buy the ticket just for the trip in Figueira Square or carry your Viva Viagem or Viva Lisboa card. See here how to bye and use your card.

Bus 714, 728 and 727

Another option to get to Belém is to take the bus trip and to do so, we would recommend two options.

Bus 714: Bus 714 departs in the same place as Tram 15E, from Praça da Figueira and, in a journey of about 30 minutes through the streets of Lisbon, will pass next to the Jerónimos Monastery, your exit spot. You can consult prices and times here.

Bus 728: If you are more comfortable taking the Bus next to the Commerce Square (Praça do Comércio), we suggest to take the bus 728, which passes through Commerce Square (see the exact place here) and leave right next to the Jeronimos Monastery.

You can consult prices and schedules here.
Bus 727: If your starting point is not the Baixa de Lisboa but, next to the Marques de Pombal, Campo Pequeno, Entre Campos, we suggest you to take Bus 727, which runs from Avenida de Roma to Restelo and is a great option for those who are located next to this route.

See here the detailed route, as well as the updated trip price.

Train

There is also the possibility of traveling by train to Belém. For this you should walk a little to the train station of Cais do Sodré (see here the exact location on google maps) and take the train, which may be towards Oeiras or Cascais, because both stop at Belém Station, which is the third stop, after Santos and Alcântara Mar, in less than 10 minutes. It has the advantage of being faster and less crowded than the previous hypotheses, but the Cais do Sodré station requires a short walk from Baixa.

The exit station, Belém, is very close to the main tourist attractions, and generally it is not necessary to wait more than 15 minutes for the next train.

You can check here for prices and times.

As in Tram 15 and the Bus, you can use your Viva Viagem card to buy the ticket train. See here more information on how to buy and use the card during your trip to Lisbon.

Hop-On Hop-Off Lisbon

In a way that makes life easier for those who visit a city, there has been an increasing trend to buy daily tourist bus tickets that are specially aimed at transporting tourists along the different attractions of a city. Lisbon also has this service and can be very convenient for your travels, but more expensive than the use of public transport.

We recommend especially for those who have little time to get to know the city, because it allows you to quickly and with great comfort to move to the points of greatest interest, allowing you to choose where you want to stop and enjoy the view along the trips. Its great for a family trip, your kids will love it.

You can consult prices, times and circuits here and here

MyTaxi, Uber or Cabify

With the competition from Uber and later from Cabify, taxis were forced to modernize, and you can call a taxi in Lisbon with the application MyTaxi, using your smartphone, in an similar way to what happens with Uber and Cabify.

As the distance from downtown Lisbon to Belém is not big, it can often get cheaper or, not much more expensive, but more comfortable to choose one of these chances of traveling. The price is more competitive especially when traveling with family or friends. Having a good occupation of the car, may result in a cheaper deal than public transport.

Suggestions

All the ideas that we leave here are valid for your trip to Belém. It all depends on your personal tastes, where you are located and, of course, your budget.
Lisbon is a very safe city, however, as in any other place in the world, there are those who try to take advantage of tourists, so public transportation more linked to tourist areas sometimes end up having a bad reputation for pickpockets.

Despite the good work of the local police forces in preventing this crime, we always give the suggestion to be careful, especially at the times when the transport is fuller and, at the time of getting in and out of the vehicle.

Despite this safety suggestion, we reinforce the idea that Lisbon is a very safe city, it has an incredible beauty, with a wonderful gastronomy that certainly will not stop you and your family from marveling.
Enjoy your trip, and do not forget to leave your comments and suggestions, as well as share in your social networks our post.
