Day 6: From Akureyri to Borgarnes (395 Kms)

Blonduos- We started our trip real soon, because this was going to be a very big day. We drove in the direction of Blonduos (143 kms), a small town with restaurants and a service station. It was a good place to lunch. Iceland is always a beautiful place to drive but, probably this was one of the less interesting part of the road-trip.

Hrútafjörður- After lunch, we pass by Hrútafjörður, a pretty fjord in the north-west of Iceland. It is about 36 km long and is south of Hafaafli bay (we pass by its right side, near Þjóðvegur).

Grabrók- Later we passed through Grabrók, which is a rough lava field, about 3000 years old, covered with moss growth and birch. It has several craters. Grabrók is one of the craters in Grabrókarhraun, situated next to the road n1. You have to get out of the car and make a comfortable ride to the top of the crater but, after you got there, you get to enjoy the great view from the top of Grábrók.

Deildartunguhver- Then we drove to Deildartunguhver, catching the road 50. Here we got to see the most powerful source of natural hot water in the world, it emits 200 liters of boiling water per second, its impressive to watch the hot water coming out of the rock.

There are a lot of greenhouses in the area and, you can purchase tomatoes in there, just leave the coins and bring a bag of Icelandic tomatoes.

Hraunfossar Waterfalls- We got back to the car and went to Hraunfossar.  Hraunfossar Waterfalls is synonymous with many springwater waterfalls running from Hallmundarhraun lava in western Iceland.

Barnafoss Waterfalls- Then you got to see the Barnafoss Waterfalls, just above Hraunfossar, you just have to follow the path on foot. Barnafoss Waterfalls means “Children's waterfall”. Legend has it that two children died drowned here when they tried to cross the river on foot in a natural stone arch. The mother of these children had the bow broken down to prevent other families to experience same pain. You can see the remains of that arch in the waterfall.

Bogarnes- After that, we drove to Bogarnes and enjoy the cool fjord next to Bogarnes.

Bogarnes has all you need, gas station, ATM, restaurants, its easy to choose places to eat and sleep just, be careful not to go very late to diner. In one place, we didn’t enter because it was very late (I think it was 8PM) but, we were lucky and found another restaurant, just by the fjord, beautiful and, also expensive. We really recommend, a perfect end for the day: Englendingavik restaurant.

We sleep in Bogarnes.
